Brownstreet & Vermont Tubbs Furniture Care Instructions

  1. Use a good quality paste wax such as Johnson’s on a regular basis. Follow the manufacturer’s directions on the product you choose. Wax helps protect the surface from wear and abrasion of everyday use. Tops of tables and dressers might need waxing every three months while the vertical surfaces only once a year.

  2. Dusting between waxing should be done with a cleaning polish such as Guardsman Polish or Duster Plus by Johnson’s Wax. A dust cloth that picks up dust can also be used. You should be careful not to remove the paste wax previously applied.

  3. Do not use any polishes containing silicones. The use of these products can damage the lacquer coating. In the event the piece needs to be refinished, silicone can make it a very difficult job.

  4. Do not use lemon oil or other oily Polishes, as they also tend to damage the lacquer and will attract dust.

  5. Once a year the old wax should be removed from your furniture. This is done with a solution of warm water and detergent. Dampen a soft cloth with the solution and rub gently to remove the old wax and oil. Dry with another soft cloth and apply a new coat of paste wax.

  6. Clean up any spills on your furniture immediately using a blotting action rather than a wiping motion.

  7. Should you spill nail polish remover or perfume on the furniture, do not wipe it off. These materials soften the finish, but when totally evaporated will allow the finish to return to its hardened state. After the finish has dried rub the affected area with a fine compound then apply a new coat of paste wax. The paste wax must be applied to the entire surface so that a high spot will not appear. If this fails to solve the problem the entire surface will have to be refinished by a qualified refinisher.

  8. Avoid placing your furniture in direct sunlight. This will cause certain woods to change color or sun bleach. It also affects the finish and causes it to change hues.

  9. Avoid extreme changes in temperature. Try to arrange furniture away from radiators, registers or air conditioning units.

  10. Rotate accessories on tops so they do not sit in the same spot over time. This will cause light marks if left in the same spots.

  11. Use pads, cloth or felt to protect the surface from plastics, rubber, hot dishes, flower pots and vases. Plastic and rubber product ingredients react to those of the finish.

  12. Lift objects, do not drag them across the surface. Remember to use a protective pad when writing with a ball point pen.
